We all have hyperpigmentation, but we don’t have the money to afford costly serums or treatments. The good news is that there are budget-friendly and cost-efficient DIY remedies you can use to treat your PIH, PIE, and Melasma!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Since apple cider vinegar naturally has acetic acid, it’s a natural AHA that helps resurface your skin and smooth out uneven texture, and lighten up pigmented areas. Keep in mind that since it’s a vinegar, it’s important to dilute it using a one to one ratio of water and vinegar to avoid irritation to the skin.


Given that you can tolerate the smell, you can use this as a DIY toner or pat onto the face until it’s absorbed into the skin. Afterwards, you can rinse off the vinegar and pat dry. This method is good for PIH and melasma since it decreases melanin production over time.

Green Tea & Matcha

Green tea is a popular ingredient due to its high levels of antioxidants known as EGCG. It has anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a great ingredient to help with PIE. Additionally, green tea can help to lighten up hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin production in the skin. 


You can do a DIY treatment using leftover green tea bags. Apply the bags to the pigmented areas of the skin, and massage in gentle circular motions until the tea is absorbed. You can also make a homemade DIY matcha mask using matcha powder, some water, and even raw honey.  


Milk contains lactic acid which is great for lighting up dark areas and hyperpigmentation in the skin. 


To treat your hyperpigmentation using milk, try heating a bowl of milk until it’s warm enough to dip your finger in. Take a washcloth and soak it into the bowl of milk. Afterwards, you’re going to want to wring out the excess and gently press the washcloth onto clean skin until well absorbed. Continue to soak, wring out, and pat the milk into the skin. When the bowl is empty, wait until your face dries before rinsing off.

Aloe Vera & Tea Tree

Aloe Vera is a great ingredient for removing scars, calming the skin, and reducing redness. It is also a natural emollient and skin hydrator. It contributes to repairing damaged skin, improves the elasticity of formed tissue and promotes growth of healthy skin. Additionally, tea tree oil is a great essential oil for fighting redness and inflammation. When used properly, tea tree oil is effective in fighting active breakouts.

On their own, aloe and tea tree are great anti-inflammatory ingredients for hyperpigmentation. They’re especially great for PIE, since they work to calm inflammation in the skin.


To use the Aloe Vera, simply cut the aloe vera leaf and scoop out the gel. Apply the fresh gel onto your skin and massage in circular motions until absorbed into the skin. 

Alternatively, you can mix two-three drops of tea tree oil into 20 drops of carrier oil (i.e. argan, jojoba, olive, or rosehip oil) and dab a small amount onto the affected areas of your skin once or twice daily.


Tomatoes are full of vitamin A and carotenes, which helps heal damaged tissue and promotes the regrowth of cells. They shrink pores, fight acne, remove tans, and brighten the complexion. Since tomatoes contain acids that help to brighten the skin, it’s especially great for those with PIH and Melasma.


Take one red tomato and cut into pieces. Transfer the tomato pieces into a blender or food processor and blend until pulp consistency. Apply the pulp evenly onto your face  and leave on for fifteen to twenty minutes. Wash your face afterwards and apply your normal skincare.
