Retinol reigns supreme when it comes to combatting acne and fine lines and wrinkles! Or if you’re looking for something stronger – meet its cousin, retinoid. As with anything, not everyone’s skin is suitable for these vitamin A stars, especially those with sensitive skin. Possible side effects such as peeling, flaking, dryness, and redness. Thankfully, we came across four amazing retinol alternatives that are gentle enough to get you that natural, youthful glow – minus the irritation!

Just a disclaimer: the ingredients below are available in the market but with limited research/studies. And while they have similar effects to retinol, they may not be as effective.

1. Bakuchiol

What is it:

Bakuchiol is an active compound extracted from the seeds of the babchi plant, aka Psoralea corylifolia. Fans consider it to be the plant alternative to retinol, despite having no connection to vitamin A!

What can it do:

‘What can’t it do’ is the question! It contains antioxidant properties as well as brightening, anti-inflammatory, and other great benefits. Above all, there’s no stinging or photosensitizing!

Is it worth it:

Yes! This is a good alternative, especially for those pregnant and with sensitive skin. The ideal concentration is anywhere between 0.5% – 2%.

2. Beta-Carotene

What is it:

Picture a carrot! This carotenoid is found in many of your favorite fruits and vegetables. It’s what gives them that vibrant orange, yellow, and red coloring, of course! What you might not know is that it’s also a precursor to vitamin A!

What can it do:

Packed with antioxidants, beta-carotene is often used as a cosmetic colorant! Plus, it can increase cell turnover, therefore giving you that smooth, radiant, youthful-looking complexion!

Is it worth it:

Another great ingredient to keep on your radar if you want something low risk and gentle! The results may take time, so as always, be consistent!

3. Pink Algae

What is it:

On Wednesdays, we wear pink – more specifically, pink algae! Otherwise known as Dunaliella Salina Extract, this newbie is a micro-algae found in salty lakes and sea-salt fields. It’s able to adapt and survive very harsh conditions.

What can it do:

This tiny ingredient is rich in antioxidants, a slew of nutrients, and…beta-carotene. Not only does it help resurface the skin, but it also decreases free-radical damage and stimulates collagen production. Plump, smooth skin? Yes, please!

Is it worth it:

The antioxidant benefits are promising. So if that’s what you want, go for it! The resurfacing capabilities, however, are extremely mild.

4. Granactive Retinoid

What is it:

Granactive Retinoid (Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate) is one of the esters. Also, the closest you’re going to get to pure retinoic acid and retinol without all the side effects. Interestingly, it’s very similar to tretinoin – just in a more stable, less irritating way.

What can it do:

It has the ability to bind directly to your skin’s receptors. In other words, it’s an anti-aging holy grail! It also works wonders regarding hyperpigmentation, acne, enlarged pores, and skin texture!

Is it worth it:

You betcha, it’s definitely worth trying! With benefits like these, who wouldn’t be interested?
