When comes to searching for holy grail items for acne prone skin, the struggle is real. But if there’s one type of product that’s guaranteed to help those pesky pimples, it’s the pimple sticker. Otherwise known as hydrocolloid bandages, these little dots are miracles for drawing out pus and other nasties from within.
But how do they work exactly?
The magic lies in the material. Within each hydrocolloid bandage is a material made with pectin or gelatin. These ingredients act as a moisture barrier that can help speed up the skin’s healing process.
Different types of pimple patches
For pustules and whiteheads
The first type of pimple patch is what is described above. It’s a bandage that protects the pimple and sucks out all the trapped oils and bacteria. With these bandages, you’ll find that there’s plenty of different brands out there that create their own versions with differing sizes, thickness, and opaque-ness of a pimple patch. But they all work similarly to protect your skin against environmental factors such as bacteria and the sun’s UV rays.
The second type is essentially an elevated version of a normal pimple patch since it contains active ingredients like tea tree oil or salicylic acid. These active ingredients are infused into the gel of the hydrocolloid patch. So while it’s stuck on the face, the patch works by delivering active ingredients into the skin to calm and soothe that affected area.
For these two types of patches, it’s worth noting that they’re great for use on pimples that are coming to a head or already has a head that’s waiting to burst. TMI much? They’re also a godsend, especially if you’ve been impatient and accidentally (or purposefully) popped the pimple. But no worries – stick on of these bad boys on and all is good with the world again.
For underground cystic and hormonal acne
Then there’s the micro dart patch, which is a fairly new approach to our market of pre-existing pimple patches. As the name suggests, these patches are designed to go straight to the source or zit’s epicenter to prevent it from further swelling. Once applied to the skin, the microdarts release active ingredients beneath the skin’s surface, which makes them a great option for under-the-skin cystic acne.
One thing to know about micro dart patches is that the price is a bit steep. Since the technology around the micro patches are still developing, the effort and research in the product and its packaging adds up to the price, which is more than your average pimple stickers.
