Felicia and Rowena worked hard for five months to provide you with our very own Beauty Within jewelry in collaboration with Ana Luisa!

After the first batch of jewelry set sold out, we’ve finally restocked. If you were wondering about the whole process and the inspiration behind the designs, read on!

Inspiration Behind the Designs

For Felicia and Rowena, they wanted to create jewelry pieces that reflected Beauty Within’s core message. That’s why they decided to come up with a design that is traditional but has a contemporary twist.

The inspiration of the necklace and the bracelet came from the design of ancient coins. These coins were used in ancient East Asian civilizations thousands of years ago. The ancient coin was round in shape, but it also had a square cut out at the center. Back then, this design allowed people to string up the coins, hang them over their shoulders or necks, and use them as currency.

Felicia and Rowena then started thinking of ideas to create an original design based off the idea. They created a mood-board on Pinterest of anything that inspired them. Felicia then found a picture of five or six of the coins stacked on top of each other. In this manner, the coins looked like a flower when viewed from the top. That got her to think, “what if the design is a flower but we put a square cutout in the middle?”

Symbolic Meaning of the Coin

In traditional Chinese culture, the phrase “wai yuan, nei feng” complements the coin. When translated literally, this means: “outside-flexible.” “Wai yuan” represents the round shape of the coin, and “nei feng” represents the square in the center.  Symbolically, the phrase represents how a person should conduct oneself. “Wai yuan” or “outside” shows that a person is a well-rounded individual who has a flexible demeanor. “Nei feng” or “square” represents a person’s inner core as stable, well-structured, and grounded. In a way, this represents the duality concept of Yin and Yang because both sides help bring balance.

Five is a Magic Number

Although the image that Felicia and Rowena found had seven coins strung together to form the flower-like shape, the decision to use five flowers for the bracelet (and five petals for each flower) was no coincidence. The number five is considered a magical number in ancient Chinese culture. There is the concept of Wu Xing or the Five Elements that played a very important role in Ancient Chinese philosophical thought and conduct. This included explaining “natural phenomena and extending to the description of aesthetic principles, historical events, political structures, and social norms, among other things.”  For Felicia and Rowena, the number of petals on each flower as well as the five petals for the bracelet serve as a reminder to reflect this concept.
