Have you ever walked into Sephora or any store, purchased a product on a whim, gave it a try… and it did nothing for your skin type? Worst of all, it gave the opposite effects! So, what are some products that actually work for oily or dry skin types? We found a K-Beauty brand called Skin & Lab that did well for Felicia and Rowena’s different skin.
Lab & Co and Skin & Lab
For those of you who’ve heard of K-beauty brands I’m From or CHICA Y CHICO, Lab & Co is the umbrella parent company of these brands. There’s also Skin & Lab, which aims to be the foundation of all things skin-care. Skin & Lab believes that their products can help you really understand your skin concerns and your skin type, and take out most of the guesswork out of building your routine. Doesn’t this sound amazing?
And as a side note, here’s two fun facts. The CEO of Lab & Co was an ex-engineer before he focused on beauty and skincare. He also founded the company to end child hunger in the U.S.
Barrierderm Line
Skin Type: Dry, Sensitive, Whiteheads
Best Used: Year-Round, but BEST during winter
Key Ingredients
Fila-Seed
Also known as filaggrin, this ingredient is a protein that works to strengthen our skin barrier. Filaggrin is naturally found in our body to protect our skin from the outside environment. It’s also an essential ingredient that prevents breakouts and acne. According to a research paper, people with atopic dermatitis, eczema, or other skin-barrier compromising conditions have low amounts of filaggrin in their system. If you think about it, it really makes sense! If the shield isn’t working properly, then it’s letting some of the pollutants go past the defenses!
Ceramides
If the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin act as the bricks, the ceramides are the waxy glue that sticks them together. They also act as a shield to protect your skin from invading microorganisms, pollution, and harmful UV rays. Best of all, they’re perfect for locking in good ol’ moisture from the inside. Plus, they make your skin look super plump and youthful.
Azulene
It’s an organic compound derived from chamomile. It’s also the main ingredient for giving a bluish color (cause you know…it’s named after “azul”, which is Spanish for “blue”). Besides its color, this ingredient is anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants to help calm down irritated or inflamed skin. And in case you were wondering, the ingredient can show up as “guaiazulene” in the ingredients list.
Other Notable Ingredients
Fatty alcohols
Despite their name, these alcohols are great for dry skin because they act as emollients to soften the surface of the skin. In products, fatty alcohols work as thickening agents to give the product’s texture a whipped-like texture.
Sodium Hyaluronate
When it comes to ingredients that hydrate the skin, hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are very common go-to’s. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that draws water from the air and pulls it into the skin. This in turn, helps the skin increase moisture levels and leaves your overall complexion looking healthy, glowing, and hydrated.
