Now that we covered skincare basics and provided supplements, we’re up to skincare extras for upgrading your routine.

Unlike your basics and supplements, products belonging to this category are more of a personal preference and choice. It’s kind of like giving your skincare a more luxurious or pampering feel.

Here are four types you might come across for skincare extras (in no particular order):

  • Face Masks
  • At-Home Peels
  • Retinols
  • Gadgets

Face Masks

They’re essentially serums applied to the face with a cotton sheet. Since the sheet mask acts as a barrier between your skin and the outside world, they work to trap moisture into the skin. By doing so, the active ingredients within the sheet masks are able to reach into your skin’s deeper layers.

Peels

Like a pamper session at a spa, at-home peels are exfoliants for shiny and baby soft skin. Since peels come in high concentrations of chemical exfoliants, it’s important to follow the product’s directions carefully to avoid irritation or burning.

Gadgets

This really defines the “extra” in skincare extras. We’re talking about face massagers, eye wands, jade rollers, cleansing devices, and the like. Basically, it’s anything you can physically use to help boost the quality of your skincare routine.

Here’s a brief breakdown of what some of the common types of gadgets do for the skin.

Facial Wand

This is an umbrella term that generalizes different kinds of facial wands you’d see on the market today. But many more or less preach the same purpose. They promise to tighten wrinkles, reduce acne, tone the face, and depuff under eye bags.

Face Steamers

Face steamers take the spa experience to your home! It’s believed that face steamers help clear the complexion by using steam to remove makeup, dirt, and oil from within your pores. Additionally, it helps the products you apply after to sink into the skin.

Jade Rollers

It’s a tool with a history of hundreds of years. But now it’s a must-have product in countless beauty bloggers’ skincare routines. Besides its aesthetically pleasing appearance, jade rollers are known for stimulating the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of the body’s immune system by helping to drain out excess waste fluids accrued in the body. The physical motion of using a jade roller helps depuff the skin, clear complexion, and soothe the skin.

Cleansing Devices

Similar to facial wands, cleansing devices are tools that work to provide a more effective cleanse than using your fingers. There are a variety of cleansing tools you can find, such as spin brushes and vibration integrated technology. It’s kind of like those sonic toothbrushes but for your face.

When to change your skincare routine?

Lastly, here’s a question for you: is the following statement what you thought of at some point in your life?

“I’ve been using this product for a long time and nothing happened. But now I see these bumps or other reactions all over my face. It must be because my skin got used to the product so it’s not working anymore.”

If you said yes, you’re not alone! A good majority of us had this thought, especially if we just started our skincare routines. It’s easy to think that a product is good only if we see a drastic or quick improvement in our skin. But when we think in this mindset, we also tend to forget that our skin also plays a huge part in our skincare.

Everything around us is constantly changing, so our bodies too have to make changes to adjust and keep you functioning. For example, when the weather and climates turn cold and dry, your skin loses more water into the air. When there’s an imbalance of your hormones, your body will react by causing your skin to act up and create more breakouts.

So when you find redness, inflammation, stinging, rashes or textured bumps on your skin when your products didn’t change, it’s more likely that your skin is experiencing changes. During these times, switch to basic products that focus on hydrating your skin. The key is to help your skin return to its normal state so you can incorporate your usual products back into your routine.
