As the world of skincare is constantly evolving and new trends emerge, keeping up with what’s best for your skin can be difficult. That’s why I’m excited to introduce you to the next big skincare trend: skin flooding. Skin flooding is a new and popular skincare trend that involves saturating the skin with a hydrating mist or toner to keep the skin hydrated and fully ready for the rest of your routine. Although it has been trending recently, it’s a routine you may already be doing! Today, let’s explore the benefits and potential drawbacks of skin flooding, tips on incorporating it into your skincare routine, and the best products for this technique.

What Is Skin Flooding?

Skin flooding is a skincare method that involves four simple steps: gently cleansing your skin, spritzing a mist on damp skin, applying a serum or two, and moisturizing your skin. The goal is to boost elasticity and allow better absorption of your routine. You are basically “flooding” your skin with hydration and layering on your products from thinnest to thickest to help prevent water loss! Also, each step should be applied on damp skin, so don’t wait too long in between each step.

Is Skin Flooding Good For All Skin Types?

This method can benefit all skin types, as hydration is important for maintaining healthy skin regardless of skin type. Skin flooding can help to plump and firm the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture and tone. It is, however, especially helpful for those with dry and sensitive skin during the winter season. If you have normal to oily skin, maybe you can consider doing this as your weekly hydration treatment rather than a daily routine. For those with acne-prone skin, you may want to be cautious of following this trend because excess hydration and products can lead to clogged pores and trigger breakouts.

How Is Skin Flooding Helpful?

This routine can be very helpful for skincare users as it provides several benefits. First and foremost, it delivers intense hydration to the skin, essential for maintaining healthy skin regardless of skin type. Saturating the skin with a hydrating mist helps plump and firm the skin, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles and improving overall skin texture and tone. Additionally, skin flooding can enhance the absorption of other skincare products, allowing them to penetrate more deeply into the skin and work more effectively. Overall, skin flooding is a simple yet effective way to provide the skin with the hydration it needs to look and feel its best.

Can Skin Flooding Break Me Out?

While this routine is unlikely to cause breakouts, using the wrong products or over-moisturizing can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. It’s important to choose lightweight, non-comedogenic products and avoid layering too many heavy creams or oils on the skin. Make sure to tailor your routine to your skin’s needs.

  • If you have sensitive skin, avoid irritating ingredients and actives like retinol, AHAs, lactic acid, and glycolic acid.
  • For acne-prone skin, stick to gentle and lightweight formulas with ingredients like centella asiatica, heartleaf, and mugwort.
  • Got oily skin? Make sure to use lightweight products so that your skin does not feel too oily and heavy! Thin and gel-type moisturizers will do!
  • And for those with dry skin, go ahead and layer on all of the hydrating ingredients. But remember, when using hyaluronic acid, use it on damp skin!

Why Should I Apply My Products On Damp Skin?

Using skincare products on damp skin has several benefits. But most importantly, damp skin is more receptive to absorbing skincare products, allowing the skin to fully benefit from the active ingredients in the product. Additionally, applying products on damp skin can help lock in moisture, especially for those with dry or dehydrated skin. This can also help to prevent the skin from feeling tight or uncomfortable after cleansing. Overall, using skincare on damp skin can improve the products’ effectiveness and help lock in moisture. It is a simple yet effective step to incorporate into a skincare routine for someone new to skincare.

  1. Cleanse your face: Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt or makeup.
  2. Apply a toner: After cleansing your face, on damp skin, use a toner or mist to balance the skin’s pH levels and prepare it for the rest of your routine.
  3. Apply a serum: Choose a lightweight, hydrating serum or essence. Look for products containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera suited to your skin type and concerns.
  4. A second serum is optional: After a thin layer of a hydrating serum or essence of your choice, you can add a second serum to target specific skincare concerns. One great ingredient to use is a serum with niacinamide.
  5. Follow up with moisturizer and sunscreen (in the morning): You want to seal everything in. Apply a moisturizer to lock in the hydration and protect your skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen.

It’s important to note that while skin flooding can be beneficial for all skin types, it’s important to choose the right products and avoid over-moisturizing to prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Start slowly and see how your skin reacts to the method before adding additional layers or trying it more frequently.

The Best Skin Flooding Routine?

Good products for skin flooding include lightweight, hydrating serums or essences that contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera. Choosing products suited to your skin type and concerns is also important. Here is a great skin flooding routine suitable for most skin types!

Editor’s Final Thoughts

This routine is nothing new since many skincare users use this method, especially while using hyaluronic acid. But I was happy to see that there’s an official name to describe the application process. I also love that the trend’s becoming more recognized so that many people can benefit from it. I know I did. As someone with dry skin, I love this process! It makes me feel like I am laying on the best nourishment for my skin while feeling great! It makes my skin glowy and shiny (not that deep-fried oil kind of shiny, but the glazed donut kind). Since skin flooding encourages applying skincare onto damp skin, I truly think this method can help anyone struggling with dehydration and those who want their skincare to sink *DEEP* into their skin. Besides, whether you’re a skincare beginner or a seasoned pro, I don’t think there’s any risk to trying skin flooding out since it’s so easy to tailor according to your skin type and concerns. I highly encourage everyone to go ahead and give it a try! Your skin will thank you.
