Did you know that certain bacteria can actually help our skin? Yes! I’m talking about one of the hottest skincare trends of the year – PROBIOTICS! We all want to know what the hype is. But first, let’s teach you guys everything you need to know about these tiny microorganisms and more. Welcome to Probiotics 101!

Chapter 1: Microbiome

The entire body is actually home to trillions of different organisms. Together, they make up what is known as the microbiome. Each one of us has a unique combination of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ microbes that work together to make sure we flourish. Both on the inside and on the outside.

But what happens when everything is out of whack? Just like everything in life, there needs to be a balance. So once the ‘bad’ bacteria start to take over, you know things are about to go down. This imbalance can lead to a number of digestion and health problems. Additionally, you may also experience skin issues, such as dryness, irritation, compromised skin barrier, eczema, acne, etc.

Journey of the Biotics

Among these microbiome organisms, there are pre-, post-, and, of course, probiotics. Each of these ‘biotics’ have specific functions that help the body in a number of ways:

Probiotics are naturally found within our bodies and on our skin. But you can also find them in your favorite fermented foods, as well as your over-the-counter supplements. You might be familiar with the words, lactobacillus or saccharomyces. These popular bacteria and yeast aid in digestion and support the immune system. More importantly, they restore balance to the microbiome. This can then strengthen the skin’s barrier and protect it against environmental aggressors, among many other wonderful benefits.

Now, prebiotics are just as important because they essentially ‘feed’ the probiotics [aka the ‘good’ bacteria] so that they can multiply and work their magic. The best way to get your daily intake is through your diet. Be sure to eat your fibers, my beauties!

Finally, we have the postbiotics. They are the byproducts, or waste, let out after the probiotics have consumed the prebiotics. Fun fact: you already know most of them! Some of the different forms include, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and amino acids.

Chapter 2: Probiotics and Fermentation

Is there a difference between probiotic and fermented skincare? In a nutshell, no. Probiotic-based products contain fermented ingredients and vice versa. In fact, most products rarely list the bacteria/yeast on its own. For instance, you might find Lactobacillus linked to a special fermented ingredient or extract, like soybean or pumpkin. And you might even see ‘ferment filtrate’ at the end. There’s a reason for this.

The Benefits of Fermentation

Fermentation is like a booster shot to the skin. It increases antioxidant levels, antimicrobial properties, and many other components that our skin needs. It also breaks down complex compounds to help the ingredients absorb better into the skin. On top of that, fermentation makes the product safer and more suitable for sensitive skin due to reduced irritation.

Once the ingredient goes through the fermentation process, it will become more concentrated and nourished than ever before!
