Retinol has been a hot topic lately, a form of vitamin A known as retinoids or retin-A. Retinol is an ingredient that’s highly recommended for those wanting to slow signs of aging. Not only that, but retinol also is a wonderful ingredient to consider when struggling with acne! As an avid retinol user, I felt it would be helpful to discuss this particular ingredient in depth. Today, I want to share why you should use a retinol product, other natural alternatives to retinoids, and a list of a few retinol and bakuchiol recommendations.
Why Vitamin A?
Retinol is an antioxidant that increases cell turnover, boosts collagen production, and regulates oil production. This ingredient is great for anyone who wants to reduce signs of aging. It can also help even out your skin tone and texture and clear acne! When used properly, a retinoid will do wonders for our skin!
Retinol Alternatives
If your skin doesn’t react positively to retinol, or you’re scared of the possible side effects of retinol, here are a few ingredients that can provide similar effects to your skin!
- Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol comes from the Babchi plant’s seeds and provides similar skin cell regeneration as retinol. This ingredient is said to promote collagen production, even skin tone, and minimize the appearance of fine lines. Bakuchiol is a great natural alternative to retinol! - Niacinamide: This is a well-known ingredient for minimizing hyperpigmentation and brightening the skin. Since it pairs well with other active ingredients, you can find niacinamide in any product! But for the extra benefits, you can try a concentrated serum to help control sebum production, minimize the frequency of breakouts, and reduce acne spots.
- Rosehip Oil: Rosehip oil is rich in Vitamins A, C, E, and essential fatty acids. This ingredient has anti-inflammatory properties and can help improve overall signs of aging and hyperpigmentation on the skin. Rosehip oil is also hydrating, improves skin elasticity, and can help protect the skin from environmental stressors!
How To Start

I started using a Retinol serum when I was 18, right when I started university. I used it to combat my acne, and I am so glad I did! When considering Retinoids, start at the lowest percentage (we’re talking about 0.2-0.5%!). That way, you can minimize any negative side effects like peeling, redness, and stinging. To minimize the risks, start at an extremely low percentage and work your way up with time!
The Best Methods
- Beginner: If you are new to retinol, try using your retinol product once a week during your nighttime skincare routine after your moisturizer step. That way, the moisturizer will act as a buffer, and the retinol will not irritate your skin.
- Intermediate: You can mix your retinol product with your moisturizer! Instead of using the retinol directly onto clean and dry skin, you can use it alongside a heavier occlusive to help your skin absorb the retinol and minimize drying or irritation.
- Advanced: When your skin is used to retinol, you can apply your retinol product directly onto cleansed and dry skin and follow up with a moisturizer. This method will allow the retinol to penetrate deeply into your skin cells and work its magic for dramatically improved skin.
Do’s and Don’ts!
As mentioned in the above chart, here are a few things to follow when using a Retinol:
- Make sure to use a retinol product at night to work its magic as your skin enters recovery mode!
- For beginners, ease into your retinol product by applying once or twice weekly in low percentages.
- Always wear SPF in the morning to prevent potential photosensitization!
- Don’t use other actives in your routine to minimize negative side effects!
- Take care not to spread the product to the eye and neck areas!
